IN - GUR - LAND ... OUT!
Well that's that then. Another defeat, and another inflicted by our traditional rivals at soccerball - Germany. Woe is us. The team that everyone said "they're not as good as other german teams" dealt the team many dubbed as a "golden generation" for england a sound whooping.
Whilst 4-1 is indeed flattering, as explained later in this page, there is no doubt that Loew's team looked far more penatrative, and Capello's drones looked abysmal defensively. The game was not settled tactically per say, Germany capitalised from England's forcing of the game, however England's first half defensive display was, as its well documented, abhorrent. As if to further confound this, the midfield were overlooked, with another display seeming to rely on a Hollywood pass (See previous articles on OTBAO). The front two for England, Defoe and Rooney, barely had a touch, and although at times, Mertesacker looked clumsy, he was assured, in complete contrast to Neuer, who looked as confident as a BP executive in a US courtroom.
Diving right into it then - Rooney. The only reason for his 4 shocking displays could be injury. He failed to complete a pass in the first half today (n.b. I've yet to check the actual stat on that), and whilst his control had greatly improved from the group games, his pace lacked, his desire waned and frankly he just looked poor. So if injury is his excuse, why play a 50% player? Surely two fit strikers would have given the three lions a better chance? Not meaning to start a debate between who is the better support player between Crouch and Heskey, and much less, who should've been in the squad to start <COUGH> BENT! <COUGH>, but surely there must be questions raised of Rooney's inclusion. If it is not injury then his form was bad enough to have him dropped. If Capello, oft heralded as THE pragmatist in English football, thought dropping Rooney dropped his best chance of a goal, then how did he maintain this view after his group stage form? It harks back to his betrayal of his vow of picking form players for the WC (A. Johnson, D. Bent and S. Parker to name a few).
Now, enough focus on Shrek. Now for some defensive wailing. But this is an easy one. It will be well documented the world over. But not enough focus will be on the follies of John Terry. Much like Cannavaro for Italy, he was undone by his lack of pace and agility. Look to England's player of the tournament in Cashley Cole, who's best assets are just those; pace and agility. It is the reason week in week out he is a good player. Look also to Germany's dangerman Oezil, fast as lightning, he gave England endless problems. Thanks as to time, as this is Terry's last World Cup.
Whilst i predict 80% of back pages will be chosen from an English player crying and the shot of the ball clearly over the line (find me a german who will argue that. I wager there are none.), there is no doubt the latter decided the game. I'm not saying the game would have been won by England had the goal of stood, but there can be no doubt that Germany would not of scored the two breakaway goals that they did.
I do not wish to close that article on a sour note. I feel at times England played well, although they were too suspect in every department to be considered contenders today. They were beaten by a faster, stronger and eventually better team. A winner makes their luck, and it showed today. England have a few positives. We can start afresh in a few positions; Goalkeeper, Centre half, Centre mid and Striker. That is, to state the obvious, the spine of a team. A bold theory; Start blooding Joe Hart and other youngsters, and players previously overlooked against friendly opposition between now and the 2012 Euro's. It could be a different story if we go with a definite ~20 ish players who know our regime (see Spain for a team that knows who's who). All is not lost, and there can be much to gain.

I don’t support England or Germany. I may have a slight bias against England as an Australian, but I definitely hate Germany after the 4-0 thrashing we took. So this is as neutral as it gets.
Rooney, no comment. Perhaps shouldn’t have played him, perhaps there was no other option.
Upson was the 4th choice CB. He hardly played together with Terry before this. Either way, both were horrible.
My issue is with the left-wing spot. Why is it so hard to play a winger, right-footed or left-footed, on the left wing? I may not like Gerrard but I know he is one of the best English center midfielders around. Play him there!
Maybe it was instructions maybe it was instinct but Gerrard so often drifted back to the center that it wasn’t funny. At one point Rooney was holding up the ball about 40 yards away from the goal, he looked to his left looking for the lay-off, and realised Gerrard wasn’t there. You could see the frustration in his eyes. And where was Gerrard? 5 yards to the right of him of course.
Not only does he vacate the left-wing spot, he robs Barry and Lampard of stuff to do. The midfield then gets so congested with 3 in the middle, 1 right, none left.
Wright-Phillips, Joe Cole, Aaron Lennon. Anyone on the left but Gerrard.
Upson and Terry were both awful, no argument at all. The reason the focus should be on Terry is that he was meant to be the rock in the defence and Upson was meant to be the weak link, but they were both horrific, and Terry should just have been better.
As for Gerrard I think the left was genuinely the only position he could play. He’d had a poor season, so Lampard was ahead of him it seemed, Barry was in as a defensive midfielder, and Rooney was apparently not to be solely relied upon upfront. On the left he fitted into Capello’s system of narrow midfield and overlapping fullbacks. You’re right in that Gerrard was so often infield that it became entirely ineffectual, but that could be put down to a number of reasons, tactical indiscipline, his have-a-go-hero attitude or simply impatience. If you watched Milner, he did the job. Looking first to beat his man, or deliver, he made use of Johnson overlapping as and when. He didnt drift inside as much as Gerrard, but nor did he remain as wide as a winger.
Thanks for the comment! BTW , great result in the cricket or what?!
On cricket, heh, depends whose side you go for.
I don’t know about the overlapping fullbacks but Ashley Cole was hardly overlapping anybody. He was running into space vacated by Gerrard more than anything. Perhaps it’s not the left-wing problem that killed England and I don’t suggest Gerrard is the one at fault. It’s just the only things that I find truly puzzling. The defense sucking is no news to me. And most importantly, there was just too many negative stories about the English camp that I wonder how bad it actually was.
Gerrard was at fault to be fair, he had no discipline in the role he was given, regardless of what a waste of talent it might have been. For a good comment on the England Camp read some of the earlier posts on OTBAO, as it is far more insightful than the drivel i could spout about it. thanks again, and just remember, the ashes are only months away,,,

Margaret Thatcher was once asked about England's loss to Germany in the World Cup (1992 IIRC?)
The reporter asked her, “How do you feel about the Germans beating us at our own sport?” To wit, Thatcher replied “It’s ok, we beat them at their own sport twice this century.”
...And as the roar of 80,000 red-clad great plains warriors fills the hallowed halls of Arrowhead, it will strike fear into the hearts of lesser men. For on that field, individual men toil for something greater than individual honors. They toil as brothers-in-arms, as 53 spirits striving towards a single purpose and driven by a single goal: The glory that comes with vanquishing your foes. They will achieve their birthright, they will be champions.
Yeah, that's really funny how over a 100 million died
with over 50 million dead civilians, many of those children and babies.
ha ha, that’s a great joke, it makes me smile.
Humor is tragedy plus time
if you haven’t gotten over the First and Second World Wars yet in order to take a joke you might want to seek out some help. There is no reason we can’t be respectful and remember what young men, women and children went through during those dark times in human history and not still be able to crack a few jokes about it as well. Seriously I think you need to lighten up. I feel sorry for you.

Greetings from Germany!
great win for us, too bad we didn’t beat you in penalties ;-) j/k
both defenses were not the best. England had the momentum when they scored the 2-2 the ref didn’t count that goal. if he counts it, the match goes in a totally different direction.
I bet you enjoyed the game. Firstly good luck against Argentina, I hope you absolutely destroy them!
The game would have had a totally different look, but i still feel the German side would have gone on to win, even had the scores been at 2:2. thanks for the comment!

thanks for the good luck wishes. i hope we’ll win but i’m doubtful. i think it will be close, maybe even in the penalties. if we win it all, at least you can say you lost to the champions.
but i’m sure your team will come back strong in the Euro 2012. some players like Rooney, Lennon and Millner are still very young.
btw, what’s your opinion on Beckham being their next coach? i think the costs for additional staff (hair-dresser, tattoo artist, make-up artist, …) would be immense…
If the first half equalizer was allowed and if Mueller hadn’t tricked the ref, the England game could have changed. Although there really is a problem with their defense. By scoring and getting even with the opponent can add up to the morale of the Englishmen while on the pitch.
I know how you feel
We too, lost to our ARCH RIVAL Ghana, but I’m sure we could firebomb them better as well.
