Watery Tart Throwing A Footy Simitar: Your EPL Weekend Preview

Sorry for the delay, but here we go:

Saturday, 7:45am EST (ESPN 2): Chelsea v. Man City

Everyone's going to be watching this for the pregame handshake.  While I'd love to sit here and tell you Wayne Bridge will coldcock John Terry in the line, or that there's even a chance of it, most likely there will be no eye contact and a limp-dick handshake that would embarrass a small child.  In fact, if Mancini were smart he wouldn't start Bridge and avoid the distraction.  But the jury is still out if he is or not.    Past that, sadly, I don't think this will be much of a contest.  Roberto Mancini has turned City into an absolute, suicide-provoking bore, and they're still awful away from Eastlands.  While Chelsea's away form doesn't get a breeze going between anyone's legs, they're home form is still as daunting as it gets.  Even with improved defensive solidarity, City will struggle to contain Didier Drogba.  Easier Chelsea win than you'd want, especially Ally.

10am EST: Burnley v. Portsmouth

Watch an actual corpse of a club play a game.  There won't be an easier three points for Burnley on offer, ever.  Worse, whatever passion the Pompey players can arouse would only be to attract buyers for their services, so watch 11 guys pulling in 11 different directions.  Does not a cohesive unit make.

Bolton v. Wolves:

Would anyone genuinely miss these two when they're gone?

Birmingham v. Wigan (FSC)

Does anyone actually get FSC HD?  I certainly don't.  Does anyone know when Comcast will add it?  ESPN has ruined my acceptance of regular definition for footy.  Anyway, Birmingham have gone off the boil recently, but Wigan are God-awful away from the JJB or whatever the fuck it's called now.  Not interrupt your breakfast for this one.

12:15pm EST (FSC): Stoke v. Arsenal

Last time the Gunners were here, Stoke absolutely rolled them in the Cup.  Arsenal weren't terribly good in Portugal, and no one wants to head to Stoke (that goes for all walks of life).  Arsenal keep belching that they're still in the title race, and they do have an easy run in.  But these are the games they have to have, and they've been more likely to biff them recently.  Stoke haven't lost in their last 7 league games, and will relish the chance to beat up some Arsenal toddlers.  The Gooners title chance ends for once and for all tomorrow.

Sunday, 8:00am EST: Spurs v. Everton (Setanta- the last  time I'll write that)

The team chasing fourth against the team that should be chasing fourth.  God knows what Landon Donovan can do against a shaky Spurs defence.  Everton were wonderful against Chelsea and ManUre, but then were just as awful in Lisbon on Thursday.  How does that trick affect them?  Spurs have won their last two by a combined 7-0, though Bolton and Wolves are pretty much the remedial class.  Pavlyuchenko is scoring, as Redknapp finally figured out he can play a little bit.  Could be a real good one here, assuming a thin Everton squad can overcome their midweek sojourn.

10am EST: Sunderland v. Fulham

Sunderland are backing up quicker than Dracula at dawn.  Fulham also had midweek activities, and may not be up for a visit to the always tropical Northeast.  Bring a sponge.

10am EST: Liverpool v. Blackburn (FSC)

Awful and effective, that's the new Liverpool crest.  They'll scrape one here, and if Rafa has enough sense to put Carragher alongside Agger to replace Skrtel, instead of trotting out Grecian clown car Kygiakoskhoabi, they probably won't give up one either.  Fat Sam misses game trying to pat himself on back.

Arsenal toddlers?

This will be one of the older Arsenal teams of the season, seeing as Sol Campbell, 57 is playing.

Horrible challenge by Shawcross

really really awful, and I don’t care if he left the pitch in tears, he could’ve ended Aaron Ramsey’s career.
This is the 3rd time this has happened to Arsenal, and I don’t want to here the old mantra “arsenal don’t like it up ’em” it’s that that has led to this, and the refs must do a better job of protecting our players.

By the way, glad I didn’t bet on these projections, because Portsmouth, Arsenal, and Man City all won.

Shawcross Horror Tackle

Arsenal players looked sick to their stomachs after it. Poor Ramsey.

What do you suggest

could have avoided this? It was a 50/50 ball and he just got unlucky; Arsenal trade on this belief everyone’s out to get them. Funny how they never noticed it when Adams, Bould, Dixon, Vierra and Petit were hoofing lumps out of the opposition.

Bad luck: that’s all it was.

by rudi on Feb 28, 2010 3:24 AM PST up reply actions

It's not bad luck, or a coincidence

This is the 3rd time in 4 years that it has happened to one of our players, and it has to do with the same old bullshit of “arsenal don’t liek it up ’em”, “wimpy foreigners can’t take it”. The referees do not protect us. What happened to Matthew Taylor when he kneed Cesc Fabregas in the neck? What about all the times Darren Fletcher has made dangerous tackles and got away with it? I don’t want referees to give yellow cards all the time, but when it has happened 3 times in 4 years (and it hasn’t happened to any other clubs) it’s no coincidence.
A young player’s career is in danger, he may never come back the same. Yes it was a 50-50 ball, but Shawcross swung right through, after the ball was gone.
And yes, teams are out to get Arsenal. We are one of the most fouled teams in the Premier League, and we suffer the most impact injuries. And when you mention Adams, Bould, Dixon, Vierra and Petit, 4 out of those 5 have been gone from the club for almost 8 years, and the other for 5 years. And I don’t seem to remember any of those 5 severely breaking a player’s leg.

That's just rubbish.

Have you forgotten Van Persie’s stupid challenge? Or Gallas’s HORRIBLE stamp on Davies’ ankle? You emember? The one where he didn’t even get called for a foul and Arsenal went up the field and scored? Currently Arsenal play pretty football using young boys so teams are going to be more physical: that’s just obvious isn’t it? Same happens to Spurs; there’s no point crying about it. In fact Spurs are THE most fouled team in the League (followed by Everton and Hull) but those three teams have learned that you need some steel in the middle of the park when you’re playing a contact sport.

Oh, and it doesn’t happen to other clubs? Tell that to Everton: more fouled, lost Fellaini to a proper two-footed foul, out for the season. Or how about Chelsea losing Ashley Cole for the season? Doesn’t happen to other clubs my weeping hole…

Also, there are seven teams who have committed fewer fouls than God’s Own Arsenal currently, so be careful when you’re playing the victim card, eh?

One final part of your whine to refute: most impact injuries? Arsenal currently lie fourh behind West Ham, Portsmouth and, at the top, yep: Spurs.

by rudi on Feb 28, 2010 2:52 PM PST up reply actions

where do you get the table for most impact injuries, and most fouls?

Yeah, Gallas was a horrible challenge. But in the end it wasn’t a leg breaker.

Tell that to Everton: more fouled, lost Fellaini to a proper two-footed foul, out for the season

Fellaini’s injury actually came from his stamp on Kyriackos.
Also look at the kind of fouls Arsenal commit. They usually do not commit fouls that are dangerous or reckless.
Doesn’t happen to other clubs my weeping hole…

Excuse me, but have other clubs gotten really awful injuries, like the Eduardo one, or the Ramsey one? 3 times in 4 fucking years, and nothing has been done about it.
One time, ok it’s a one off. Second time? Ok, bad challenge, could’ve happened to anyone. But this is the 3rd time you nob, which you fail to address. This is the 3rd time an Arsenal player has been on the end of an awful challenge from an agricultural centre half, and have a severe leg break, like this.
I know Spurs fans don’t see the problem when it comes to Arsenal, but seriously Aaron Ramsey’s career is in fucking danger and you call it bad luck. Shawcross followed through on the challenge after the ball was gone.
And I said most fouled teams, and we have some steel in the centre of the park (Song who got one of the softest yellow cards ever).
And until you say where that info for “most impact injuries, Spurs are top (Glad to see you’re top of something) is your argument is moot”.
Yeah, you’re right, I have no right to moan about these sort of challenges

"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"

by firejerrynow on Feb 28, 2010 3:28 PM PST up reply actions

And yes Arsenal used to be a more physical team

and Patrick Vieira was a physical and sometimes dirty player, but he’s been gone for 5 years now.
and there are other injuries that happen from bad tackles, but Arsenal get the worst of them, and nothing is done to protect them. That is my main and original point.

And it's a rubbish and untrue point.

But seeing as this has descended into you calling me names (it’s spelled “knob”, by the way) I’ll have no more of it. You can find the stats yourself while you’re hunting for some manners…

by rudi on Feb 28, 2010 5:16 PM PST up reply actions

oh so having 3 serious broken legs that will keep players out for a year isn’t the worst of them.
If you don’t give me the info, why should I believe it’s there?
Oh, and it can be nob or knob. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=nob

You don't

have to believe me; I’m under no obligation to satisfy the demands of someone calling me names. I left the playground quite some time ago thanks. Go find the stats if you’re that suspicious, it took me seconds.

And you’re using the world-reknowned Urban Dictionary as a spelling source? I stand corrected in the face of such a learned tome…

by rudi on Mar 1, 2010 7:56 AM PST up reply actions

if my point is so rubbish

thats why proper journalists like Patrick Barclay, and others said exactly the same thing.

"We're investigating the investigative procedure of the investigation of Tony Bernazard"---Omar Minaya (he really didn't say it but he would"

by firejerrynow on Mar 1, 2010 3:42 AM PST up reply actions

He has a living to earn

by coming out with such tosh. There is far more copy from writers expressing different views today. I’d rather use The Urban Dictionary than The Times for my sports comment; well, for ANY comment really. It’s a comic without the funny drawings now.

You’re entitled to your opinion, as is Mr Barclay; I was just using those damn facts to point out your assertions were incorrect. If that makes me a “nob” so be it, but at least I’m an accurate “nob”.

by rudi on Mar 1, 2010 8:01 AM PST up reply actions

Patrtick Barclay is one of the better journalists

and its not just him who have said that, and what he said was “if the tackle was along the ground, he wouldn’t of broken his leg, and there are a number of challenges that could’ve broken players leg, and the FA needs to fix the problem”.

Leaving aside the silliness about Arsenal being targeted,

I just wonder why you single out Darren Fletcher? Watch enough United and it’s pretty clear that Scholesy is the midfielder who makes a lot of utterly ridiculous challenges.

by Nate on Feb 28, 2010 11:35 PM PST up reply actions

I was just making a point of Darren Fletcher

Because

you can pick any name at random, really; when you’re making baseless accusations veracity’s the last thing on your mind.

Bolton

I happen to be a Bolton supporter, and I think we will be missed if we go, but I fully expect us to spend our tenth straight season in the top flight next fall.

Fact is, a small town club that punched above its weight, qualified for Europe and performed admirably there, and had several impressive results against the big boys, is surely a credit to the game and an example of what the Premier League should be about.

How did Jack Wilshere do yesterday?

by firejerrynow on Feb 28, 2010 3:58 AM PST up reply actions

Wilshere

He played OK. There is no doubting his talent, that is for sure, but he is 18 with very little experience, and it shows. He will look great running at defenders, get himself in a good position, then try to play an incredible ball that Fabregas could only pull off 2 times out of 10. After losing the ball, he will track back willingly, but then commit a silly foul at the halfway line.

Don’t get me wrong, I am glad we have him, and he is certainly earning his place int he team, but he has a lot to learn. After all, that is why Wenger sent him to Bolton, to get experience.

And he seems to realise his mistakes, you can almost see him improving throughout the match.

by Dennis Chase on Mar 2, 2010 3:50 PM PST up reply actions

I remember being really impressed with him

in the Carling and FA Youth Cup last year, but not so much this year, so its nice to see he’s doing alright.

His talent is amazing, he’s arguably the best english talent to come through since Rooney
